Five More Outbreaks of Bird Flu in Bangladesh

BANGLADESH - The Bangladesh veterinary authorities have sent a report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about five new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The Bangladesh veterinary authority sent Follow up Report No. 16 to OIE on 12 March.

It covers five new cases of HPAI. Three of the cases were in Rajshahi (in the north-west of the country), and the other two were in Chittagong (in the far south-east) and in Dhaka in the centre. Three outbreaks were on commercial farms and two in backyard flocks. In total, 5,981 birds were involved, of which 911 died. The remaining 5,070 were destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 virus subtype has been confirmed.
