Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - While the number of eggs placed was down eight per cent, the number of broiler chicks placed was down six per cent, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Broiler-Type Eggs Set In 19 Selected States Down Eight Per Cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 200 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 21 March 2009. This was down 8 per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler Chicks Placed Down Six Per Cent

Broiler growers in the 19-State weekly program placed 171 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 21 March 2009. Placements were down six per cent from the comparable week a year earlier. Cumulative placements from 28 December 2008 through 21 March 2009 were 2.01 billion, down six per cent from the same period a year earlier.
