Bangladesh Culls Chicken After Bird Flu Detection

BANGLADESH - Over 2,300 chickens were culled in a poultry farm in Bangladesh's Savar, about 30 km north of capital Dhaka, on Wednesday night following detection of bird flu, leading newspaper The Daily Star has reported today.

Sources were quoted as saying some chickens died at the poultry farm in Savar in the last few days.

When samples of the dead chicken were sent to central disease investigation laboratory in the capital, bird flu was primarily detected in the chicken on Wednesday.

According to a World Bank release in March this year, the first bird flu outbreak in Bangladesh was in March 2007 and continued till July 2007. The second wave came from September 2007 till May 2008 and the third spell started in September 2008.

The release said the overall bird flu situation in Bangladesh this year has stabilized, adding Bangladesh remains a high-risk country for bird flu outbreak.
