Four New Bird Flu Outbreaks in Viet Nam
VIET NAM - The veterinary authorities have reported new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
The Vietnamese veterinary authority sent Follow up Report No. 31 to OIE dated 21 May, describing four new outbreaks of HPAI, which started between 20 April and 14 May.
The cases – all on farms, not backyard flocks – are widely distributed with one each in Tinh Son in Quang Ngai province (central coastal area), Thien Phu in Thanh Hoa province (northern coast), and two outbreaks in the Mekong River delta in the south of the country (at Tan Hoi Trung in Dong Thap province and Nguyen Van Thanh in Vinh Long province.
In total, 12,342 birds (of unspecified type) were involved in the four outbreaks, 589 were affected and 503 died, while 4,339 birds were destroyed.
The presence of the H5N1 virus sub-type has been confirmed.
