The US exported a total of 463,710 MT of chicken leg quarters in the first quarter of 2009, +10.7 per cent from 2008 levels (418,864 MT). Lead destinations of US leg quarters in 2008 were Russia, Ukraine, Cuba, and others (see chart). However in the first 3 months of 2009 the leaders were Russia, Lithuania, China, Cuba, Angola, Mexico, Iraq, Turkey, Vietnam, and Latvia. Guatemala and Ukraine fell to 11 and 19 respectively. Ukraine’s latest antidumping investigation against the US and Brazil opened in March 2009, along with outbreaks of H1N1 and avian influenza in the US and the ensuing trade bans on US product might explain some of the differences. Despite the -19 per cent in leg quarter exports to Ukraine in the first quarter of 2009 from 2008, levels remain relatively close. Based on the charts, despite the US Dollar weakening against the Russian Ruble and the Ukrainian Hryvnia, US chicken leg quarter exports have fallen since their peak in September 2008; whereas the dollar’s value against the Cuban Peso and US leg quarter exports have remained constant the past 3 years. Cold storage volumes have paralleled US leg quarter prices the past 2 years; however it will be interesting to see current holding numbers in light of the recent higher prices.
