Monthly US Turkey Hatchery Report

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), turkey eggs in incubators went down eight per cent and 14 per cent fewer poults were hatched during May compared to the same month in 2008.

Eggs in incubators down eight per cent

Turkey eggs in incubators on 1 June 2009, in the United States totaled 29.2 million, down eight per cent from 1 June 2008.

Eggs in incubators were up two per cent from the 1 May 2009 total of 28.8 million eggs.

Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down eight per cent, West North Central up slightly, North and South Atlantic down 15 per cent, and South Central and West down 15 per cent.

Poults hatched during May down 14 per cent

Turkey poults hatched during May 2009 in the United States totaled 23.4 million, down 14 per cent from May 2008.

Poults hatched were down five per cent from April 2009 total of 24.7 million poults.

Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down 15 per cent, West North Central down 11 per cent, North and South Atlantic down 14 per cent, and South Central and West down 25 per cent.

Net Poults placed down 16 per cent

The 22.8 million net poults placed during May 2009 in the United States were down 16 per cent from the number placed during the same month a year earlier.

Net placements were down five per cent from the April 2009 total of 24.0 million.
