Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report
US - This week, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that the number of broiler-type eggs set was down four per cent compared to the same week last year, and three per cent fewer chicks were placed.

Broiler-type eggs set in 19 selected states down four per cent
Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly programme set 204 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 18 July 2009. This was down four per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler chicks placed down three per cent
Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 168 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 18 July 2009. Placements were down three per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.
Cumulative placements from 28 December 2008 to 18 July 2009 were 4.88 billion, down six per cent from the same period a year earlier.
