Comment on Salmonella Programme for Turkeys

29 July 2009

UK - The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has launched a consultation on the National Control Programme for the monitoring and control of salmonella in turkeys.

The National Control Programme (NCP) is intended to reduce and or control the prevalence of Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium in turkey flocks for the protection of human health. It will be brought into force in January 2010 to comply with the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 2160/2003 and Regulation (EC) No 584/2008.

DEFRA says it hopes that the NCP will enable the UK turkey flocks sector to build on its success in the protection of human health, and benefit from producers across the EU by applying approaches which are consistent and comparable.

The purpose of the consultation is to agree an implementation programme which meets government obligations to public health and EU law, whilst taking into account the achievements of industry in controlling Salmonella and the business needs of producers.

Comments on these proposals are invited by 23 September 2009.
