Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report
US - The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that while the number of broiler-type eggs set was down three per cent, the number of chicks placed was down two per cent compared to the same week last year.Broiler-Type Eggs Set In 19 Selected States Down Three Per Cent
Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 195 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 5 September 2009. This was down 3 per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler Chicks Placed Down Two Per Cent
Broiler growers in the 19-State weekly program placed 167 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 5 September 2009. Placements were down 2 per cent from the comparable week a year earlier. Cumulative placements from 28 December 2008 through 5 September 2009 were 6.05 billion, down 5 per cent from the same period a year earlier.
