From January through June 2009, poultry shared 13.57 per cent of the total agricultural output, up 4.31 per cent from the first six months in 2008. Chicken eggs posted the biggest production gain of 7.40 per cent. This was attributed to the continuous increment in inventory of layers and better egg-laying efficiency ratios in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao. Because of lower culling of duck layers, duck production declined by 6.74 per cent. The non-replacement of layer stocks pulled duck egg production down by 5.84 per cent.

Chicken production was up 4.15 per cent due to an uptrend in broiler production from commercial farms. Duck and duck egg production fell during the period. Duck production fell 6.74 per cent because of a lower culling of duck layers; the non-replacement of layer stocks pulled duck egg production down 5.84 per cent.

The Philippines poultry sector grossed P67.8 billion (US$1.4 billion) at current prices, up by 13.14 per cent in the first semester of 2009. Increases in both production and farmgate prices enabled poultry raisers to earn more from chicken and chicken eggs with gross earning going up by 12.36 per cent and 17.78 per cent respectively. Although of duck eggs was down, gross earnings increased by 8.86 per cent due to higher prices. The gross value of duck production was 3.4 per cent lower during the same period because of further contraction in production.

Poultry prices continue to appreciate an average of 8.6 per cent this year. Chicken meat recorded a price hike of 7.89 per cent while duck prices increased by 3.58 per cent. Chicken eggs and duck eggs were 9.67 per cent and 15.61 per cent higher than last year’s prices.

Weighted average farmgate prices in pesos per kilogram for January-June 2009 were 80.57 for chicken, up from 74.68 for the same period in 2008. Duck prices were 68.01, up from 65.66; chicken eggs were 85.55, up from 78.01; duck eggs were 73.48 up from 63.56 pesos per kilogram. The overall all growth rate for poultry prices was 8.46 per cent for January-June 08-09, up from a growth rate of 5.48 per cent for January-June 07/08.
