USDA Chickens and Eggs Report - August 2009

US - US egg production totalled 7.59 billion during August 2009, up one per cent from last year. Three per cent fewer broiler chicks and four per cent egg-type chicks were hatched, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in their monthly Chickens and Eggs report for August 2009.

August egg production up one per cent

US egg production totalled 7.59 billion during August 2009, up one per cent from last year. Production included 6.51 billion table eggs, and 1.08 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.00 billion were broiler-type and 72 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during August 2009 averaged 332 million, down one per cent from last year. August egg production per 100 layers was 2,284 eggs, up one per cent from August 2008.

All layers in the US on 1 September 2009 totaled 333 million, down one per cent from last year. The 333 million layers consisted of 277 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 52.7 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 2.95 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on 1 September 2009 averaged 73.8 eggs per 100 layers, up one per cent from 1 September 2008.

Egg-type chicks hatched up four per cent

Egg-type chicks hatched during August 2009 totalled 37.2 million, up four per cent from August 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 36.5 million on 1 September 2009, up slightly from a year ago.

Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled 291,000 during August 2009, up four per cent from August 2008.

Broiler-type chicks hatched down three per cent

Broiler-type chicks hatched during August 2009 totalled 778 million, down three per cent from August 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 618 million on 1 September 2009, down three per cent from a year earlier.

Leading breeders placed 7.13 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during August 2009, down seven per cent from August 2008.
