Haiti Reports Low Path Avian Influenza Outbreak

HAITI - A new case of Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) virus has been detected in Haiti.

The Haitian veterinary authorities sent Follow-up report No.2 to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) yesterday, 22 October. The disease was first confirmed in the country on 5 June 2008.

So far, there have been a total of three outbreaks in Haiti since the time it was first confirmed. Altogether, five cases of HPAI have been detected.

The OIE reports that the two main ways in which the disease has been spread is through introduction of live animals and through illegal movement of animals.

487 birds were destroyed in the vicinity of the outbreaks at Limonade and Fort St Michel and 132 birds in the vicinity of the outbreaks at Ferrier and Ouanaminthe.

The OIE, in conjunction with the country's veterinary authorities, have applied several measures to curb the spread of the disease.
