Disputes Widen over Poultry Trade within Nepal

27 November 2009

NEPAL - A situation of domestic protectionism is deepening over movements of poultry between Nawalpur and Chitwan.

MyRepublica reports that, going against the spirit of open market competition, locals of Nawalpur in Nawalparasi district have restricted supplies of poultry products from Chitwan in the district.

They restricted the supplies of chicken from Chitwan – the largest poultry producer in the country – saying that locally produced poultry products could not find market due to supplies from Chitwan. They said they would not allow chicken produced in Chitwan enter Nawalpur unless around 10 tons of locally produced chicken is sold in the market.

As a part of their protest against poultry suppliers of other districts, Nawalpur locals also did not let a truck carrying chicken produced in Chitwan enter Mukundapur area of Nawalpur on 25 November.

A three-month-long restriction on the movement of poultry carrier from Chitwan to Kathmandu ended recently, following the protest by poultry entrepreneurs of Chitwan. However, the disruption in supplies has not ended completely, as locals in Lamjung, Tanahun, Kaski and Rupandehi districts are still creating hurdles in transportation of poultry products.
