DA Bans Poultry Imports from Czech Republic

03 December 2009

PHILIPPINES - The Department of Agriculture (DA) has temporarily banned the entry of birds and poultry, including their products, from Czech Republic as part of its efforts to keep the Philippines safe from avian influenza or the bird flu virus.

In a directive, DA Secretary Arthur Yap said the ban includes the immediate suspension of the processing and evaluation of the application and issuance of veterinary import clearances to import the said products products from Jihocesky in the Czech Republic.

The ban was imposed as the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) or World Animal Health Organisation earlier announced an outbreak of bird flu in Jihocesky, according to ABS-CBN News.

Mr Yap also ordered the agency's quarantine officers and inspectors to stop and confiscate all shipments of live birds, poultry, and poultry products into the country originating from Japan and the Czech Republic.

DA Undersecrtary Bernie Fondevilla said the ban and other emergency measures were necesary to protect human health and the poultry industry in the Philippines, which has remained free from bird flu for the past 6 years.

Other Southeast Asian countries free from bird flu include Brunei and Singapore.
