West Nile Virus Reported in Costa Rica

The Costa Rican veterinary authorities have sent at Immediate Notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report, dated 8 December, describes three outbreaks of WNV in horse species in the state of Guancaste in the west of the country. In total, there were four cases and three animals died.

According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the WNV is most often spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread WNV to humans and other animals when they bite.
