Pilgrim's Pride Corporation has said it has reached a settlement with the federal government to pay $4.5 million to settle an investigation into identity theft and other alleged crimes, according to Wall Street Journal.

The agreement marks the end of the government's investigation at five Pilgrim's Pride plants that began in 2007. The poultry producer said it will pay the fine over the next three years.

As part of the settlement, Pilgrim's Pride agreed to enhance its compliance programmes to more accurately identify unauthorised persons who seek or gain employment through identity fraud.

The company told Wall Street Journal that no criminal or civil charges were ever filed against it during the investigation. It added the settlement did not constitute any admission of misconduct on the part of the company or its executives.
