New Outbreak of Bird Flu in India

WEST BENGAL, INDIA - A new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been reported in West Bengal.

The Indian veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 15 January to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes a new outbreak of HPAI at Khargram in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal. It started on 12 January in a flock of around 80,000 village poultry. Around 1,000 birds died.

The virus has been identified as belonging to the H5 sub-group.

The last outbreak of HPAI in the country was in October 2009.
