The 'Poultry nutrition and climate, new developments' course will cover basic aspects of nutrition and acclimation physiology, and will focus on the interaction between the impact of climate conditions on nutrition and the nutritional requirements of poultry. The scientific basis of the interaction between climate and nutrition will be discussed, as well as the effects of individual feed ingredients. Part of the course will be devoted to a discussion of the influence of nutrition and climate on immunology, stress and the occurrence of metabolic diseases, all important health parameters. In addition, the importance of nutrition and climate for a high-quality, safe end-product and the latest developments in alternative production systems will be covered.

The course leaders will, as for previous courses, be Professor E. Decuypere (Catholic University of Leuven) and Dr P.C.M. Simons (World's Poultry Science Association/WPSA, the Netherlands).

Objective and target group

The goal of the course is to provide a concise update on the principles of poultry nutrition and climate. Participants will gain an understanding of the latest developments in the field against the background of changing societal perceptions of poultry production practices. The focus will be on theoretical background information, while practical solutions will also be discussed.

The course is intended for nutritionists, advisors, veterinarians, managers, teachers, researchers and other professionals involved in poultry production. Participants are assumed to have a basic knowledge of feedstuffs and diet formulation, and the principles of the chemical and biological evaluation of feedstuffs in an agricultural context. Presentations and documentation will be given in English.
