Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that, compared to the same week last year, two per cent fewer broiler-type eggs were set, and the number of chicks placed was down slightly.

Broiler-type eggs set in 19 selected states down two per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 201 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 16 January 2010. This was down two per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler chicks placed down slightly

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 167 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 16 January 2010. Placements were down slightly from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 3 January 2010 to 16 January 2010 were 334 million, down one per cent from the same period a year earlier.
