USDA Chickens and Eggs Report - December 2009

US - US egg production totalled 7.83 billion during December 2009, up one per cent from last year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in their monthly Chickens and Eggs report for December 2009.

Production included 6.76 billion table eggs, and 1.07 billion hatching eggs, of which 995 million were broiler-type and 72 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during December 2009 averaged 340 million, down slightly from last year. December egg production per 100 layers was 2,304 eggs, up 1 per cent from December 2009.

All layers in the US on 1 January 2010 totaled 340 million, down slightly from last year. The 340 million layers consisted of 284 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 53.8 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 2.94 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on 1 January 2010, averaged 73.8 eggs per 100 layers, up 1 per cent from 1 January 2009.

Egg-type chicks hatched up seven per cent

Egg-type chicks hatched during December 2009 totaled 39.7 million, up 7 per cent from December 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 38.9 million on 1 January 2010, up 6 per cent from a year ago.

Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled 309 thousand during December 2009, up 55 per cent from December 2008.

Broiler-type chicks hatched down slightly

Broiler-type chicks hatched during December 2009 totaled 778 million, down slightly from December 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 633 million on 1 January 2010, up slightly from a year earlier.

Leading breeders placed 6.66 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during December 2009, up 1 per cent from December 2008.
