Sanna Steenfeldt is no stranger to working in the European section of the international poultry organisation. Since 1991 she has been a Danish member of the organisation and has participated in the planning of many European symposia on nutrition, not least in 1997 when the WPSA working group held their meeting in Denmark.

Sanna Steenfeldt takes over the chairmanship from Colin Whitehead from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh.

Focus on poultry nutrition

Fifty-year-old Sanna Steenfeldt is a senior scientist at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences where her research focuses on the nutrition and physiology of monogastric animals, primarily poultry. This includes the study of the nutritional value of different raw materials in relation to nutrient absorption and passage rate through the intestines. Her work on the effects of N and P excretion is incorporated in different projects in her department.

Ms Steenfeldt also studies the use of alternative feed sources including roughage in organic egg production and the effect of these feeds on digestibility, production parameters, disease and mortality. She collaborates with behavioural scientists at DJF on the feeding with satiety-enhancing feedstuffs with a view to promoting animal welfare.

Before she joined the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Ms Steenfeldt studied zoology and zoophysiology at Aarhus University where she graduated with an MSc in 1988. In 1995 this was followed by a PhD from what was then the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (now KU Life).

In addition to her research, Ms Steenfeldt teaches on DJF’s masters course in Agrobiology at Aarhus University. She also teaches master students under Danida projects, particularly in subjects related to feed choices for free-range hens under extensive farming and reproductive conditions.
