US - US egg production totalled 7.69 billion during January, up slightly from last year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in their monthly Chickens and Eggs report for January 2010.

January egg production up slightly

US egg production totalled 7.69 billion during January 2010, up slightly from last year. Production included 6.61 billion table eggs, and 1.08 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.01 billion were broiler-type and 75 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during January 2010 averaged 339 million, down one per cent from last year. January egg production per 100 layers was 2,268 eggs, up one per cent from January 2009.

All layers in the US on 1 February 2010 totalled 338 million, down one per cent from last year. The 338 million layers consisted of 281 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 54.5 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 2.96 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs.

Rate of lay per day on 1 February 2010, averaged 72.5 eggs per 100 layers, up one per cent from 1 February 2009.

Egg-type chicks hatched up two per cent

Egg-type chicks hatched during January 2010 totalled 38.8 million, up two per cent from January 2009. Eggs in incubators totalled 39.3 million on 1 February 2010, up 12 per cent from a year ago.

Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totalled 227,000 during January 2010, down five per cent from January 2009.

Broiler-type chicks hatched down slightly

Broiler-type chicks hatched during January 2010 totalled 776 million, down slightly from January 2009. Eggs in incubators totalled 628 million on 1 February 2010, up one per cent from a year earlier.

Leading breeders placed 7.22 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during January 2010, up one per cent from January 2009.
