Minister Highlights Industry Successes in Brunei

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM - Poultry is a multi-million-dollar industry in Tutong and other regions, the Minister has said in a Council Meeting.

The Tutong district generates US$44.71 million per year in the poultry industry, said the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources during the second session of the sixth Legislative Council Meeting.

Brunei Times reports that YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, who said on 13 March that the poultry industry was one of the many businesses currently being developed in Tutong.

The development in Tutong's poultry sector would be expedited by the planned creation of an Agriculture Development Areas by the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food (DAA).

For the poultry industry, the development plan is eyeing the construction of hatcheries, breeding farms and raising broiler chickens for meat.

The minister explained that areas in the district such as in Sg Paku handled by Golden Chick Hatchery and Breeding Farm has successfully produced 6.1 million fertilised eggs and 5.06 million baby chickens with a total estimated value of $11 million.

While in Batang Mitus, whose operation is currently being overseen by Ideal Hatchery and Breeding Farm has a total estimated value of $7.2 million after producing 3.67 million eggs and 2.81 million baby chicks.

Additionally, a hatchery operation by QAF Hatchery at Padnunuk produces 2.4 million chicks, bringing a total of $2.7 million.

Padnunuk is another area in the poultry industry that produces broilers, according to Brunei Times. Companies such as QAF Farm had successfully produce 3,397 metric tonnes valued at $16.4 million. Meanwhile at Birau, another company that specialises in chicken meat, Kumpulan Harapan Baru, produced 1,754 metric tonnes valued at $8.9 million.
