The US exported a total of 112,898 metric tons (MT) of chicken leg quarters in January 2010, 29 per cent lower than a year ago (159,640 MT) and 20 per cent lower than December 2009 (141,051 MT).
Despite recent trade barriers between the US and Russia and China, Russia continues to be the largest destination of US leg quarters with exports down 60 per cent from 2009. Other decreases from last year include Lithuania (-23 per cent), Iraq (-31 per cent), Cuba (-47 per cent), Georgia (-40 per cent), Vietnam (-3 per cent), Angola (-75 per cent) and China (-76 per cent). But some saw increases from 2009: Mexico (+33 per cent), Taiwan (+346 per cent) and UAE (+439 per cent).
In 2008 and 2009, US leg quarter prices saw record highs. Fresh domestic bulk leg quarter prices peaked in August and September 2008 (52.87 and 53.44 cents FOB) and in June 2009 (48.65 cents FOB) according to USDA PMNA. Presently, fresh domestic prices in January and February 2010 (34.54 and 34.04 cents FOB) are averaging levels similar to a year ago (33.50 and 34.16 cents FOB). Domestic and export prices typically trade at similar levels.
