Romania Confirms Second Bird Flu Outbreak

ROMANIA - Earlier reports of a second case of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry has now been confirmed.

The veterinary authority sent Follow-up Report No. 1 dated 30 March to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes the outbreak as starting on 27 March at Plaur in the region of Tulcea. This is the same region as the previous outbreak. Of a population of 80 hens in a backyard, 28 were found dead and 52 sick at the veterinarian's visit.

Plaur is situated in the Danube Delta, 55km from Letea. The village has 31 backyards, of which 17 hold 699 poultry (626 hens, 18 ducks, 28 geese, 21 turkeys and six guinea hens).

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the virus has been confirmed.
