"Through such an approach, the administration would prevent time-wasting," said the dean of Yogyakarta-based University of Gadjah Mada's School of Animal Husbandry.

Niken Ulupi of the Bogor Institute of Agriculture said the administration should conduct tours of the new abattoirs for private vendors and chicken producers to ensure they were familiar with the new locations and were confident they could meet demand despite having to transport their produce to outlying areas for slaughter and back again.

The city is closing down all private abattoirs and has built five new ones to comply with a 2007 bylaw aimed at stemming the spread of the avian influenza virus, according to Asian Agribiz.
