US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), there were five per cent fewer turkey eggs in incubators on 1 April than on the same date last year, and poult placements were down five per cent in March this year compared to the same month of 2009.

Eggs in incubators on 1 April down five per cent from last year

Turkey eggs in incubators on 1 April 2010, in the United States totalled 28.3 million, down five per cent from 1 April 2009. Eggs in incubators were up six per cent from the 1 March 2010 total of 26.8 million eggs.

Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central unchanged, West North Central up slightly, North and South Atlantic down eight per cent, and South Central and West down 15 per cent.

Poults hatched during March down five per cent from last year

Turkey poults hatched during March 2010, in the United States totalled 23.4 million, down five per cent from March 2009. Poults hatched were up nine per cent from the February 2010 total of 21.4 million poults.

Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down six per cent, West North Central up one per cent, North and South Atlantic down seven per cent, and South Central and West down 22 per cent.

Net poults placed during March down four per cent from last year

The 23.0 million net poults placed during March 2010 in the United States were down four per cent from the number placed during the same month a year earlier. Net placements were up nine per cent from the February 2010 total of 21.0 million.
