Poultry owners are being urged to report any respiratory illnesses in their birds to prevent wide and potentially devastating outbreaks of disease, according to ABC.

The Department of Primary Industries says there have been two recent outbreaks of an infectious poultry disease in the Bendigo region.

Infectious laryngotracheitis can cause respiratory problems and reduce egg laying in milder cases, but more severe cases can lead to significant numbers of deaths.

Senior animal health manager, Dr Rod Badman, says it is vital producers have strong biosecurity measures in place to avoid the infection spreading, reports ABC.

"They [should] put up signs to say if people are coming onto the property, have been near poultry, then they must not go into the shed or go near anything on the property," he said.
