The report describes the outcome of an inspection carried out by the Food and Veterinary Office in Malta, from 17 to 21 May 2010.

The objectives of this specific audit were to verify, as part of a general audit, that official controls for poultry meat and poultry meat products are carried out in compliance with European Union legislation and in accordance with the Maltese Multi-Annual National Control Plan drawn up in accordance with Article 41 of Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 and to investigate the action taken by the Competent Authority in order to control Salmonella in different poultry populations.

The report concludes that there is a documented system of official controls in poultry meat establishments. The situation is overall satisfactory although there are some weaknesses particularly in audit performance and follow-up of deficiencies identified in establishments.

The implementation of the Salmonella National Control Programmes in laying hens and broilers is not yet satisfactory.

The report includes a number of recommendations addressed to the Maltese Competent Authority aimed at rectifying the identified shortcomings and enhancing the control system in place.
