The Ross Middle East and Africa Association is a group of 10 Ross distributors from across the Turkey, Middle East and Africa region. The last 10 years have seen an unprecedented growth in the poultry industry, with distributors in Iraq, Zambia, and South Africa all joining the original members from Turkey, Iran, Syria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia in recent years.

The event, which took place between 23 and 26 October, was partially a celebration of the last decade but also supported the Association's aim to provide a forum where members can exchange ideas about best practice and news from the region as well as plan for the future of the industry.

John Maguire, Aviagen's International Sales Manager for the region, commented: "The members of the RMEAA have all contributed to the amazing success of the Ross brand in the region over the last decade. We have a bird that really shines in performance terms and Ross is the breed of choice.

"The best aspect though has been the development of the industry in the region. As a group we have spoken with various ministries on behalf of our members and we have seen investment and growth across the board. This has been mirrored by our members themselves who have travelled the world looking at best practise on every single continent in order to reach international standards.

"Our event in Edinburgh is as much a thank you to them for their work as it is a celebration of our success."

To enable successful growth all the Ross distributors have invested heavily in their infrastructure, with biosecurity and staff training being high priorities. Thanks to this investment, stock from the region is now in line with the stringent global standards and the distribution companies are able to compete at a worldwide level.

Ghaleb Sayyad, Owner of Sayyad Poultry in Syria said: "Being part of the Association is like being part of a family. We are a big distributor but we are always looking for ways to improve how we work and I get that support from the Ross team. The advice is reliable and we have seen growth each and every year by following the advice given at events like this.

"The annual meeting is also a chance to share ideas and find out what is happening in other countries. It gives us a much clearer understanding of the market and conditions so we can all work together to promote the poultry industry. This, combined with the great genetic potential of the Ross 308 bird means it is very easy for us to see where we will be in two, five or even ten years' time."

As well as the serious presentations, discussions and seminar sessions the event also gave many of the visitors a first chance to enjoy traditional Scottish hospitality. The team enjoyed a trip to Edinburgh Castle (see below) with a tour of the Crown Jewels as well as outdoor activities in Perthshire.
