Food experts from China and the United States, as well as Chinese business leaders, attended a workshop on livestock, poultry and meat safety in Shanghai on 8 November.

Presenters at the workshop, initiated by non-profit organisation, Global Food Safety Forum, exchanged ideas to improve food safety in China, including implementing a products traceability system, setting food processing and retailing standards, and establishing third-party inspection centers.

Song Quanhou, director of the National Food Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, called for the establishment of industry associations to ensure food safety in the country. He said China is lagging behind in this sector, since manufacturers, faced with fierce competition, were not fully motivated to gather for a talk.
