Machine That Injects Litter under Soil Wins Patent
US - Run-off of nutrients from poultry litter spurred USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS) scientists to find a solution, and the resulting machine has been awarded a patent.

A concept, with more than a decade of work behind it, reached a major milestone when a research scientist and a research technician from Arkansas were awarded a patent for a machine to directly inject dry poultry litter below the soil surface.
According to NWA Online, Daniel Pote and Stephen Haller of the ARS Dale Bumpers Small Farms Research Center in Booneville were awarded the patent in October.
The device, called the Poultry Litter Subsurfer, allows dried droppings and bedding from poultry houses to be applied to pasture lands and no-till fields without disturbing most of the plants, Dr Pote said.
