Hog and Poultry Days 2010 takes place on 8 and 9 December at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

In the past the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Agricultural and Foods Sciences has been represented with a booth highlighting information about the university's educational and research programs but this year representatives of the faculty will present talks on alternative housing systems, environmental health and feed ingredients and health.

Animal Science Department Head Dr Laurie Connor notes within each of those three areas there will be a couple of 10- to 15-minute snapshots of what is going on that is relevant to primary producers.

In the housing one we'll be talking a little bit about sow housing conversions and on the poultry side about enriched cages.

Environmental health will deal with phosphorus issues, manure phosphorus and then obviously feed phosphorus and then in feed ingredients looking at some of the opportunity feedstuffs as well as probiotics, so just a snapshot of some of the things that we think producers would be interested in or want to know where we're going with some of the research.

Both commodity groups represented there, hog and poultry, do provide us with not only financial support but generally tremendous industry support, collaborations, partnering in the things we're doing.

This is an opportunity for us to go back to them, meet with them a bit but also provide them with some information about what we are doing and hopefully also get some dialogue going with individuals so we have an opportunity to get an exchange of ideas.

Dr Connor says the event will allow all stakeholders including primary producers, suppliers and researchers to interact.
