Nepal Reports Outbreak of HPAI in October

NEPAL - An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in central Nepal.
Nepal's veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 5 December to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
The report describes one outbreak of HPAI in October on a farm at Chitwan in the region of Narayani, which borders India. There were 66 cases on a farm of 11,503 birds. All surviving birds were destroyed.
Stamping out and cleaning and disinfection of the infected farm and premises were completed on 30 October 2010. Post-surveillance activities are ongoing and no further cases in other areas have been detected so far, according to the report.
The presence of the H5N1 subtype of the influenza A virus has been confirmed.
