Bird Flu Investigated in Azerbaijan

AZERBAIJAN - Bird flu has caused the deaths of a number of poultry. An H5 virus has been confirmed as the cause.

According to the Azeri Press Agency, H5N1 virus (bird flu) has been revealed in Samukh region of Azerbaijan, Deputy Minister of Health, Elsever Agayev.

He said that the Minister of Health had received the information on bird flu from State Veterinary Service: "Thus, some of domestic birds suffered great losses and the blood samples were sent to the ministry."

He added that the virus had been indentified as the H5 type and work is on-going to investigate whether it is H5N1.
