Sri Lanka Soon to Receive Poultry Imports

SRI LANKA - The first shipment of chicken and eggs is soon to arrive in the country to meet higher demand in the festival season.

The first few batches of the chicken and egg imports are to reach Port of Colombo within the next 24 hours, according to Minister of Co-operatives and Internal Trade, Johnston Fernando.

Asian Tribune reports that, to curtail the escalating poultry product prices during this festival season, Ministry of Co-operatives and Internal Trade has placed orders for 125 metric tons of chicken and two million eggs from India.

These imports will also be available in Lak Sathosa, as well as in some selected private sector sales outlets. Last month, Ministry of Co-operatives and Internal Trade obtained Cabinet approval to import 2,500 tons of chicken and 50 million eggs in 2011.

Approximately 11,000 tons of chicken are consumed by Sri Lankans each month, of which 8,750 tons are locally produced.

In accordance with the data provided by Department of Customs, the total quantity of chicken imported in 2010 amounts to 390.3 metric tons. These imports were made from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Germany and Sierra Leone.

According to Asian Tribune, The importers of chicken are Ceylon Agro Industries (Pvt.) Ltd, D & W Food Products (Pvt.) Ltd, Gills Foods Products (Pvt.) Ltd, Granada Suppliers (Pvt.) Ltd, Keells Food Products (Pvt.) Ltd, Norfolk Foods Products (Pvt.) Ltd, and Sri Lanka Catering (Pvt.) Ltd.
