Broiler-type eggs set up slightly
Commercial hatcheries in the 19 State weekly programme set 203 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 1 January 2011. This was up slightly from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler-type chicks placed down slightly
Broiler growers in the 19 State weekly programme placed 169 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 1 January 2011. Placements were down slightly from the comparable week a year earlier.
Cumulative placements from 3 January 2010 through 1 January 2011 were 8.80 billion, up 2 per cent from the same period a year earlier.
