Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, two per cent more eggs were set and slightly more chicks were placed.

Broiler-type eggs set up two per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 205 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 15 January 2011. This was up two per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler-type chicks placed up slightly

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 168 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 15 January 2011. Placements were up slightly from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 2 January to 15 January 2011 were 336 million, up one per cent from the same period a year earlier.
