Maize Exports Cause Feed Shortages

21 January 2011

UGANDA - Increasing exports of maize from Uganda is starting to cause shortages on the local market and this could force poultry farmers out of business.

Market analysts are concerned that the exports of maize to Kenya, southern Sudan and Tanzania are causing shortages of the grain for chicken feed.

According to a report on New Vision the Poultry Association of Uganda says the cost of production has risen by 60 per cent in the last two months.

The farmers claim it now costs sh2,500 to produce a tray of eggs and sh7,000 to raise a broiler.

The association has increased farm-gate prices of eggs to sh5,500, from sh4,800 and chickens to sh8,000 compared to sh5,500 because of the rise in production costs.
