Outbreak of Fowl Typhoid Detected in Birds

HONDURAS - The country's veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of fowl typhoid in birds, the causal agent being Salmonella Gallinarum.

The World Organisation for Animal Health received an immediate notification on Monday, 24 January. The outbreak was first observed on 3 January and confirmed on 13 January.

The affected population consists of a batch of light breeders. A total of 15,393 birds were found susceptible, out of which 324 and 215 cases and deaths were recorded respectively. The remaining 15,178 birds were slaughtered. Also, 50,182 unclassified eggs and 217,692 incubated fertile eggs were destroyed.

Pathogenic agent isolation on culture test was conducted at the Veterinary Medical Research Institute of Honduras, the national laboratory, wherein the birds tested positive.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
