South Korea Reports 14 HPAI Outbreaks
SOUTH KOREA - There have been 14 new outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The veterinary authority sent Follow up Report No. 5 dated 28 January 2011 to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
Between 16 and 25 January, 14 outbreaks of HPAI were reported in the provinces of Gyeonggi-do, Jeollabuk-do (North Jeolla), Chungcheongnam-do (South Chungcheong) and Gyeongsangbuk-do (North Gyeongsang) in the south and west of the country. Farms affected reared broilers, layers, ducks, quails and/or pheasants.
In total, 292,660 birds were affected, of which 10,951 died and the rest (281,709) were destroyed.
The report adds that there were notifications of HPAI suspected cases from farmers. They were proved as HPAI virus H5N1 sub-type in NVRQS. Basically, the poultry in the affected farms and in the area within 500-metre radius from the affected farms were culled and buried. Disinfection and clinical surveillance in the area within 10-km radius from the affected farms have been intensified.
