Five New Bird Flu Outbreaks Reported to OIE

JAPAN - Five new outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were reported to the OIE in the last week of January.

The authorities sent Follow Up report No. 6 dated 2 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

There were five outbreaks starting between 25 and 28 January - three in Miyakaki prefecture and one in Kagoshima (both on the westerly island of Kyushu) and one in Aichi prefecture on the largest island, Honshu.

All the outbreaks were on farms and a total of 267,601 birds were involved. In all, 999 birds died and the remaining 266,602 were (or will be) destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the HPAI virus has been confirmed.
