National Agricultural Statistics Service

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, slightly less eggs were set and two per cent more chicks were placed.

Broiler-type eggs set down slightly

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 205 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 12 February 2011. This was down slightly from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler-type chicks placed up two per cent

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 168 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 12 February 2011. Placements were up two per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 2 January 2011 to 12 February 2011 were 1.01 billion, up one per cent from the same period a year earlier.
