Fewer Hens Kept on Larger Farms

GERMANY - In the latest census in December, there were almost two per cent fewer hen places in the country than 12 months previously, but a higher proportion of the birds were kept on farms with at least 3,000 hens.

On 1 December 2010, the number of animals kept on holdings with at least 3,000 places for hens was markedly higher again in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the holdings kept 29.9 million laying hens, which is an increase by 11.2 per cent compared with December 2009.

Industrial hen house capacity amounted to 36.7 million hen keeping places, which is down 1.7 per cent from December 2009.
