US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, slightly more eggs were set and broiler chicks were placed down slightly.

Broiler-type eggs set up slightly
Commercial hatcheries in the 19 State weekly programme set 207 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 26 February 2011. This was up slightly from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler-type chicks placed down slightly
Broiler growers in the 19 State weekly programme placed 168 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 26 February 2011. Placements were down slightly from the comparable week a year earlier.
Cumulative placements from 2 January 2011 through 26 February 2011 were 1.34 billion, up 1 per cent from the same period a year earlier.
