Two H5N1 Outbreaks Discovered in Viet Nam

VIET NAM - The Vietnamese veterinary authorities have reported two new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 47 yesterday, 8 March. The outbreaks occured in the village of Quang Ninh and at a farm in Ha Nam.

A total of 2000 birds were found susceptible to the disease, out of which 1580 cases were identified. While 1200 deaths were recorded, 816 birds were destroyed.

Three main sources have been identified as the cause of the outbreak:

  • Introduction of new live animals
  • Illegal movement of animals
  • Fomites from villages, vehicles, feed etc.
