Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), compared to the same week last year, one per cent more eggs were set and broiler chicks were placed down slightly.

Broiler-type eggs set up one per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19 State weekly programme set 208 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 5 March 2011. This was up 1 per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler-type chicks placed down slightly

Broiler growers in the 19 State weekly programme placed 168 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 5 March 2011. Placements were down slightly from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 2 January 2011 through 5 March 2011 were 1.51 billion, up 1 per cent from the same period a year earlier.
