Surveillance Reveals Three More H5N1 Outbreaks

JAPAN - Routine surveillance has revealed three more farms with poultry positive for H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No. 10 dated 11 March to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

According to the report, birds on three farms were found to the positive for the H5N1 HPAI virus between 26 February and 5 March. The farms are located in Watarai-gun (Mie prefecture), Gojyo city (Nara prefecture) and Higashiusuki-gun (Miyazaki prefecture).

Following the tests and death of 113 birds, the remaining 372,881 birds on the three farms were destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the HPAI virus has been confirmed.
