ROMANIA - Following an audit last year, the EU's Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) has raised concerns over deficiencies in sampling activities at farm level and actions following positive or suspect results.

This report describes the outcome of an FVO specific audit in Romania, which took place from 30 August to 8 September 2010, as part of the general audit of Romania carried out under the provisions of Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 on official food and feed controls.

The objective of the mission was to evaluate the actions taken by the Romanian Competent Authorities in order to control Salmonella, notably concerning the implementation of the Salmonella National Control Programmes for particular poultry populations.

The report concludes that while there are regular and well documented checks on the biosecurity measures, there are weaknesses in enforcement in cases of non-compliance. Significant deficiencies were noted concerning mainly the sampling activities at farm level and actions following positive/suspect results. The audit team noted an improvement in the situation during 2010.

The report makes a number of recommendations to the Romanian Competent Authorities, aimed at rectifying the shortcomings identified and enhancing the implementing and control measures in place.
