Govt Starts Collecting Poultry Farm Details

NEPAL - The Department of Livestock (DoL) has started determining the exact number of commercial poultry farms for the first time in the country in preparation for possible future disease outbreaks.

Records of poultry farms are being assembled to make it easier to control bird flu when the disease is detected, said DoL Director, Dr Prabhakar Pathak.

Himalayan Times reports that at a press conference organised by the department to inform about control measures against bird flu, Dr Pathak said the actual investment in poultry farms will be ascertained once the details of poultry farms are collected.

Bird flu was seen in Nepal for the first time in 2009 in Jhapa. In 2010, it was detected in Kaski.

Saying that authorities have been highly alert against bird flu, Dr Pathak said the department has can immediately control bird flu if it is seen.

Senior livestock development officer, Dr Pradeep Chandra Bhattarai, said other countries have appreciated Nepal's arrangements and measures adopted in various districts.
